Murali Sundar, CEO of Marcatus QED

About Our Founder

Murali Sundar, CEO and founder of Marcatus QED, first launched the company in 2001 from his kitchen table. Evolving the business from its origins as a broker, Murali has revolutionized the global agri-food supply chain from seed-to-shelf. The key to his success is a relentless pursuit of innovation and the trust of business partners to advise and collaborate with them on efficient and sustainable solutions. In its 22+ years of business, Marcatus QED has transformed into a pioneering, diversified, nimble, and highly profitable international business with five brands, 700+ staff, four offices, and 15,000+ growers on five continents, connecting supply with demand around the world.

Sundar is a charismatic, outcome-focused leader and risk-taker energized by problem solving and committed to collaboration, gender equality, diversity and inclusion, and sustainable development. He cares deeply about making the world a better and more sustainable environment with food security and equal opportunity for all.

An active philanthropist and food and wine connoisseur, Murali has hosted the annual Grand Cru Culinary Wine Festival since 2006. Considered Canada’s premier wine and culinary festival, this fundraiser is instrumental in supporting medical research and programs at University Health Network. In 2023, he joined Arthritis Society Canada as Board Director on the National Council using his innovation and fundraising expertise to raise awareness and support for the non-profit.

A Community-Based Approach to Building Equitable Value

Women in Agriculture: MQED acknowledges the rising role of women in farming. While women bring ecological values and are disproportionately affected by climate change, they face challenges like limited land rights, gender roles, and access to credit. The Marcatus Mobile Education Platform (MMEP) addresses these gaps by educating and empowering women in rural India.

Enriching the root of our value chain with training and tools has created sustainable supply and growth opportunities for our clients and improved livelihoods for our farmers. The lessons we've learned teaching 10,000 farming families responsible practices in India can be replicated with smallholder farmers anywhere.

Beyond consistent supply for our clients, the investment our team and partners have made in the livelihoods of farmers and the role of female farmers has won us A Guardian Sustainable Business Award for Diversity & Inclusion.
